Identifying a Soil on the Map
 |
Soil Unit
|
You can identify soil units on the map to learn more detail. Double-click the unit you
wish to identify. Once you have done this, the "Detail" pane will drop down to the lower
right of the map. In here is more detail about the item you identified. Details shown
include the dominant soil name, slope, depth, variant and information sheet, and links to.
information sheets of other soils found in the area.
 |
Profile Point
|
You can also identify soil profile points in the same manner as above. Once identifying
the soil profile point, you can see more detail including a picture.
Searching
To begin a search select what you wish to search from the drop-down list in the
"Locate Your Property" area to the upper right. Below that enter in the criteria you
wish to search with. Press the Enter key, or click the "Go" button to begin the search.
If an exact match for the search you entered is found, and there is only one item with that
name, the map will zoom to that item. If there are many items with an exact match, the map
will zoom out to highlight all those items. You can then zoom in on the item you require.
If partial matches for the criteria you entered are found, they will be presented in a list
just below the search field. Find the item you require, and click the Find link next to it
and the map will zoom to the item.

Liability Statement
These maps have been prepared in good faith by trained staff within time and budgetary
limits. The soil or climate information presented is based on the Topoclimate Survey of
Southland, and other data sources when appropriate. The associated Soil Information Sheets
describe the typical average properties of the specified soil. They are, essentially, a
summary of information obtained from one or more profiles of the soil that were examined
and described during the Topoclimate survey or previous surveys. The descriptions of soil
properties, sustainable management indicators and land use versatility ratings are based
on the soil in its ‘natural’ state and take no account of modifications that may have
resulted from management practices at specific locations.
Venture Southland, Crops for Southland and Environment Southland accept no responsibility
or liability for the accuracy of the information or interpretations. It will be advisable
to seek advice from soil and land use experts before making land use and management
decisions on individual farms and paddocks. No warranties are expressed or implied unless
